Against Socialized Medicine

In 1950 South Dakota politics made national news.

Candidates for the Democratic Senatorial nomination are Dr. John S. Tschetter, retired physician and mayor of Huron and John A. Engel, Avon attorney. Neither has mentioned the Truman administration during the campaign.

Both have promised a fight for 100 per cent parity for farm products and both have taken a stand against socialized medicine.

John Engel won the Democratic nomination.

Harry S. Truman was the 33rd President of the United States and served from April 12, 1945 - January 20, 1953. Lyndon Baines Johnson, often referred to as LBJ, was the 36th President of the United States and served from November 22, 1963 - January 20, 1969. John Engel from Avon, South Dakota is shown in the picture with President Johnson.

John Engel graduated from Avon High School Class of 1928. He passed away on November 6, 1983.
