John Engel rites held Wednesday

John A. Engel was born October 27, 1909 on a farm north of Avon and passed away November 6, 1983. He was the son of Joseph und Elizabeth (Rueb) Engel. He received his education in the Avon pubic schools and at the University of South Dakota at Vermilion. He taught school at Avon for several years and then attended Law School at USD. He was a life-long lawyer in Avon.

On June 30, 1939, he was married to Thelma Mitchell at Vermillion. Three daughters were born into their home, Patricia, Mrs. James Odens of Springfield, SD; Mary Jane, Mrs. Ronald Hewett of Winona, MN; and Jan, Mrs. Kenneth Johnson of Brandon, SD.

John Engel served in the Navy in WWII. He was active in politics in Avon and in the State. He served as head of the Democratic Party in the 60s. He served on the highway commission under Gov. Herseth. He also served in the SD House of Representatives for two terms in the 60's He was the Mayor of Avon for a number of years and also a member of the Lions Club.

About four years ago he made a Confession of his faith in Christ at the First Presbyterian Church of Avon.

In recent years he was in poor health. He lived the last year at the Good Samaritan home in Tyndall.

John is survived by his three daughters and by six grandchildren, also by two sisters: Mrs. Pauline Hubner of Tyndall and Mrs. Clarence (Ella) Corron of Hemet, CA; by two brothers: Charles of Fremont, NB and Harold of Wagner, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and two brothers.

Services were held Wednesday, November 9, 1983 at 10:30 a.m. at the first Presbyterian Church, Avon, Rev. William Miller, officiating.

Music by Rosalee Sternhagen, soloist and Sharon Kozel organist.

Casketbearers were Tom Alberts, Otto Pudwill, Allen Marek, Clark Engel, Cliff Hubner, and Charles Korman. Honorary bearers were Henry Holleman, Hank Sattler, Fred Reister, Robert Haenfler, Chester Steckler Glenn Peterson, Rev. Charles Kruse, Neil Hornstra, Harold Oorlog, Cecil Mc Lane and Ernie Hento.

Burial was in the Presbyterian Cemetery with Grave Graveside Rites, Post #150, American Legion.
